The method of gas collection depends on:

(a) Find the smallest value of the integer a for which ax^2-8x+3 is positive for all values of x.

(b) The equation of a curve is y = x^3 + 5/2x^2 -2x +1
Find the set of values of x for which y is a decreasing function.

Solution

(a)
ax^2-8x+3>0
(-8)^2-12a<0
12a>64
a>5 1/3
The smallest integer a is 6.

(b)
y = x^3 + 5/2x^2 -2x +1
dy/dx = 3x^2 + 5x – 2

(a) A shopkeeper bought a digital camera for $200. He then sold it at a profit of 35%.
What was the selling price?

(b) Mr Smith was able to buy the digital camera sold in (a), at a discount. If he paid y dollars for the camera, find, in terms of y, the percentage discount.

Solution

a) Selling price = (153/100) X 200 = $270

b) Percentage discount
= ((270 -y)/270) x 100%
= (2700 – 10y)/27 %

Introduction

H2 Further Mathematics is to be taken with H2 Mathematics as ‘Double Mathematics.
