THERMAL PHYSICS
Internal energy
1 Internal energy of a system is the sum of the random kinetic and potential energies of the molecules of the system.
Temperature scales
2 Two regions in thermal equilibrium exchanges thermal energy at the same rate and are at the same temperature.
3 A thermometric property is a physical quantity that varies with temperature.
4 Thermodynamic temperature scale (absolute temperature scale) does not depend on any thermometric property, but is based on the properties of an ideal gas.
5 Absolute zero is the temperature at which all substances have a minimum internal energy.
6 The triple point of water is the temperature at which the saturated water vapour, pure water and ice all coexist in thermal equilibrium. (Ttr = 273.16 K)
Specific heat capacity
7 The specific heat capacity of a substance is defined as the heat required to cause a unit rise in temperature of a unit mass of the substance.
Specific latent heat
8 The specific latent heat of a substance is defined as the heat released or absorbed when unit mass of the substance undergoes a change of state at constant temperature.
First law of thermodynamics
9 First law of thermodynamics states that the increase in internal energy of a system is the sum of the work done on the system and the heat supplied to the system.
The ideal gas equation
10 Molecules of an ideal gas have no inter-molecular attraction.
11 The Avogadro constant is the number of atoms in 0.012 kg of carbon-12.
12 One mole of any substance is the amount containing a number of particles equal to the Avogadro constant.

Force on current-carrying conductor
1 A magnetic field is a region of space where a force acts on an electric current in a wire or a permanent magnet.
2 Magnetic flux density at a region is the force experienced by a conductor of unit length carrying a unit current, placed perpendicular to the magnetic field.
3 The tesla is the magnetic flux density of a magnetic field when one newton of force is experienced by a conductor of length one metre, carrying one ampere of current, placed perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Magnetic flux
1 Magnetic flux through an area is the product of the area and the component of the magnetic flux density normal to the area.
2 The weber is the magnetic flux through an area of one metre squared when one tesla of magnetic flux density is directed normal to that area.
3 Magnetic flux linkage through a coil is the product of the magnetic flux through the coil and the number of turns of the coil.
Laws of electromagnetic induction
4 Faraday’s law states that magnitude of the induced e.m.f. in a coil is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage through the coil.
5 Lenz’s law states that the direction of the induced current will always flow in such a manner such as to produce an effect to oppose the change in magnetic flux linkage.

Alternating Currents
Characteristics of alternating currents
1 Peak value current of an alternating current is defined as the maximum possible value of the alternating current.
2 Root-mean-square current of an alternating current flowing in a resistor has the same value as that of a steady current flowing in the same resistor such as to produce the same average heating rate in the resistor.
Rectification with a diode
3 Rectification is a process of converting an alternating current to a direct current (flowing in one direction).
4 A diode is an electrical device with two terminals that allows current to flow through it in one direction only.
