Cell Division is completed and we are moving on to Genetics of Viruses next week!

We completed teaching Gene Therapy and Stem Cells today and next week we will go through Assignment 2 for this chapter. Subsequently we will complete assignment 1, and then move on to Plant Cloning and GMOs, the last topic of our syllabus.
Coming July, we will start to work on Essay writing. 🙂

J1 Biology Class 3.30 – 5.30pm 18/5/2013
We went through the DNA and Genomics assignments (both) today and finished the theory of the entire Cell division chapter. Cell division has been handed up to me, which we will go through next week, and cell division 2 is to be submitted next week. 🙂

J2 Biology Class 5.30 – 7.30pm 18/5/2013
We used the 2hours today to finish evolution assignment 2 corrections, learning the answering techniques along the way. I have given out the notes on Gene Therapy and Stem Cells. (And I owe Silin a copy as she was absent) We will commence on Gene Therapy and Stem Cells this coming Friday, 24/5, 11am – 1pm.

We finished going through ICSD assignment 1, and the first question of ICSD assignment 2. Next week we would continue and finish up assignment 2. Thereafter, we move on to going through evolution assignment 2. I have given out the notes on Gene Therapy and Stemp Cells. (And I owe Silin a copy because she’s absent this week).

J1 Biology Class 3.30 – 5.30pm 27/4/2013
We spent a big part of the lesson clearing our doubts over the chapter on DNA and Genomics, and then moved on to cover the first three pages of DNA mutation. Next week we will finish up the notes on mutation and also go through the DNA and genomics assignments. We will begin a new chapter on Cell Division on 11 May 2013. So do bring your friends down on that day if they would like to join the class!

J2 Biology Class 5.30 – 7.30pm 27/4/2013
We went through Cloning MCQ today as well as the first 2 questions of Assignment 1, stopping at the question on tandem repeats. We also took some time to go through how RFLP analysis works in the detection of diseased individuals and its inheritance. Next week we will continue with assignment 1 and move on to assignment 2. I have also handed out the A level 2011 paper today, to be done in two weeks’ time.

J1 Biology Class 3.30 – 5.30pm 13/4/2013
We continued with out lecture on DNA and genomics and ended the class with the termination of DNA replication. Next week, we shall revisit the last part on telomere formation and also move on to transcription and translation! The class was instructed to attempt 4 questions as homework.

J2 Biology Class 5.30 – 7.30pm 13/4/2013
We completed Part I of the chapter on DNA cloning (except the last part about expression systems) We will visit that next week and move on to explore Gel electrophoresis and Polymerase chain reaction. We completed evolution assignment 1 today and the class was released 5 minutes early. Assignment 2 will be done by next week and in the following week we will begin a new topic on DNA Cloning.

We completed enzymes assignment 1 as well as the first question in assignment 2. Next lesson would be next Saturday and we will round up the enzymes chapter within the first half an hour or so. We will move on next to do genomics!

J2 Biology Class 11.30-1.30pm 29/3/2013
We are left with GBV assignment 2 last 2 questions, this is a reminder so that we will come back to it soon. Today we went through Evolution part 1, part 2 as well as evidences of evolution. Tomorrow will be the second and last lesson on this chapter and we will attempt some questions!

We went through the assignment on plasma membranes and membrane transport. Thereafter we moved on to clear some doubts on cell division. Lastly, We completed the enzymes MCQ as well as the first two questions of Enzymes assignment 1. Next lesson would be on this Friday, Good Friday, 9.30 – 11.30 am. We will use the time to complete the whole chapter on enzymes. 🙂

J2 Biology Class 5.30-7.30pm 2/3/2013
We completed GBV assignment 1 and GBV assignment 2, except the last 2 questions. So the next lesson we will spend the first half an hour to complete these last 2 questions, and the remaining time will be used to teach a new chapter on Evolution. Bring your friends if they wish to join the class! The notes have been given out today. Let’s welcome 2 new students Naushad and Helen! 🙂
Next Lesson would be on Friday (good friday), 11.30- 1.30pm.
Subsequent lesson will be on Saturday as usual, 5.30 – 7.30pm.

We started on a brand new chapter today – Enzymes! This is a little reminder for myself that we have not gone through the assignment on membrane transport. Shall do that next week! Homework for today is enzyme MCQ as well as Assignment 1.

J2 Biology Class 5.30-7.30pm 2/3/2013
We completed the MCQ assignment for Genetic basis for variation today, and have moved on to Assignment 1. We stopped after finishing the question on Malvidin producing plants..shall complete it next week together with Assignment 2! The following week (23/3) we will commence on Diversity and Evolution. It is the beginning of a new topic so do bring your friends along if they would like to join the class!

We will move on to Enzymes next lesson! Today we completed the chapter on Cellular Structure and Functions.

We completed the theory part of Genetic Basis for Variation today, and moved on to the MCQ assignment. There were many misconceptions and inappropriate understanding of certain concepts so we spent some time going through the questions. Note that if gender is stated, it must not be taken into the calculation. But if it is not, then consider the probability of the child being of a certain gender. Homework is to complete assignment 2 for those who have done assignment 1 – and for those who have yet to complete assignment, complete both by next Saturday.

As you may refer to the post above, on the year’s schedule, we are on time. 🙂 We will end this chapter before March ends . When end of March comes we do Evolution and soon the entire core syllabus of H2 biology will be over. Hang in there!

We started out on a new chapter – Cellular structure and functions, and learned about the various organelles within a cell. Remember that these organelles are categorised into double membrane, single membrane and no membrane organelles. For each organelle, you are required to be able to
1. describe its structure
2. describe its functions
3. identify and label the organelle if given an electron microscope image

Homework: To complete mcq and assignment 1!

Today we completed both assignments 1 and 2 under nervous control, productive lesson indeed! Learned much about the various drugs that act as stimulants and depressants on the nervous system, how they target the various aspects of the system such as synaptic transmission and axonal conduction.

Homework: Read up notes on Genetic basis for variation

Next lesson will be a theory class on Genetic basis for variation. Its a brand new topic we are starting on, so bring your friends along if they are keen to join the class!

Today we reviewed the set of Nervous control multiple choice questions and went through the first question of Assignment 1. Some people did very well despite this chapter being quite challenging! Srija did well for MCQ, while Bernadette and Fujie did well for Assignment 1. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more of such achievements! 🙂

Homework for the holiday: Nervous control assignment 2.

We will be wrapping up this chapter of Nervous Control on 23/2/2013. From March onwards (2/3/2013) we will do Genetic Basis for Variation. As usual, the first lesson (2/3/2013) will be a theory class on this brand new topic. So bring your friends along if they are keen to join the class!
