Tuition Centre Singapore Physics Tuition – Dynamics and Forces
Common Error
Friction can only be experienced by moving objects.
Correct Concept
Friction can also be experienced by stationary objects as long as there is a tendency of motion. When an external force is applied on a stationary object, the object will tend to move. Friction will appear to oppose this tendency of motion and its magnitude will vary to match the magnitude of the external force up to a maximum value. If the external force is larger than the maximum value, the object will move. If not, the object will remain stationary
