Tuition Center Singapore Physics Tuition – Kinematics
Common Error 1
Speed is the magnitude of velocity, so distance is the magnitude of displacement.
Correct Concept 1
Speed is the magnitude of velocity, but distance travelled is not necessarily the magnitude of change in displacement. It is only true if the object moves in one direction only.
Common Error 2
In solving questions on kinematics, we define positive direction as motion to the right for displacement and to the left for velocity.
Correct Concept 2
In solving questions on kinematics, positive direction can be defined as motion to the right or left. All vector quantities (including displacement, velocity and acceleration) in that direction will be positive.
