Which one of the following is a possible configuration of a stable M3+ ion in the ground state?
A 1s2 2s2 2p3
B 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1
C 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d2
D 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d2 4s2
Answer C
A stable M3+ is either in Group III ion or a transition metal ion. Hence it should have a fully filled s and p orbitals and/or partially filled d orbitals. Electrons from 4s orbital would have been lost first if M is a transition metal
