Issue: To what degree does one’s ability dictate their success?

Context: General

Definition of success: Success refers to the accomplishment of an aim or purpose and is taken to have a positive connotation.

Definition of Ability: Ability refers to having the means or skill to do something. In the context of this question, it would refer to a person’s skills or the means a person has access to that would help accomplish an aim.

1. Success can be determined by one’s talent or skills. 

1. based reality TV shows such as AmeMusic rican Idol, The Voice, X-factor etc. Do not train a person from scratch. Usually only those with talent are chosen and then go on to win the competition and experience some kind of success. Notable examples include Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Adam Lambert…
2. Even in the business world, people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Jack Ho all had very entrepreneurial spirits and had the talent for planning, making connections etc. Without these abilities, it is arguable as to whether they would have experienced any success
3. Similar case even in the sports industry e.g. Lionel Messi, Serena Williams, Usain Bolt…

2. Success is not necessarily determined by one’s ability alone, opportunities must also be present. 

1. Take for example in the previously mentioned Kelly Clarkson case, if American Idol had not been created, she may not have had the opportunity to showcase her talents.
2. Thus, even if she had the ability, without opportunity she may not be the star that she is today.
3. eg. Nick Vujicic, no doubt he had good public speaking skill, he still needed some luck to be spotted in order to become so famous and attain success

3. Success may also be determined by the hard work and effort put into one’s endeavours. 

1. Stephen Hawking, whose work on the nature of space and time remains groundbreaking and whose story of personal triumph despite suffering a neuro-muscular dystrophy has inspired millions.
2. eg. Lupita Nyong’O studied hard earning both a degree and masters in the film/theatre arena and also taking up many different roles in the production industry to gain experience

4. Success, in the business world especially, depends a lot on one’s connections 

1. eg.  Alibaba’s main founder, Jack Ma, did not start up the company on his own. There are 17 other founders that are less recognized.
