1. Social media acts as a form of self-expression and is influencing how we share our personalities. However, there are people who abuse these platforms for their own amusement at the expense of others.
2. Human beings are social creatures, and therefore, are dedicated to creating and participating in “social networks” in order to express and share their ideas. With the rise of the internet, people began satisfying this natural necessity in online communities such as internet forums. However, there are many cases of individuals leaving intentionally annoying messages in order to get attention or simply cause trouble. For instance, Twitter trolls inundated Caroline Criado-Perez with threats of rape after she petitioned for Jane Austen’s image to be on the new £10 note. the Twitter trolls began to target her too. And in the latest twist, several female journalists were sent bomb threats. One motive for trolling, and perhaps one we’re all most familiar with, seems to be simple boredom – too much free time after school, at work, or between jobs. These are the individuals who are trolling to kill a few hours, entertain themselves, and even impress others of a similar mind-set.

2. In this information age, social media is used as an important tool to gather up-to-date information like how thousands used Twitter following the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan. Nevertheless, social media sites are also buzzing with gossip which some/most users seem to prefer over more important news.
3. In our “join the conversation” culture, it seems as though no “conversation” is deemed too trifling, and though slow news days have been around as long as reporting the news has, social media can make a frenzy out of a single picture. Reporters and commenters alike felt the need to say something about Beyoncé’s hairstyle, which appeared to be a wig with short, choppy bangs. Everyone with an Internet connection was invited to Weigh In: Love It or Leave It!
