Trust is of great value today
- Trust is of great value today because it is needed to ensure the stability of a country and facilitates governance. Anti-government sentiments tend to proliferate quickly today regardless of the degree of truth and reliability in the accusations and have increased citizens’ distrust of the government which made it harder to run and govern a country today.
- Singapore’s alternative media like therealsingapore.com, thehearttruths.com, tremeritus.com are constantly criticising the government and its policies, and portraying unchecked news and opinions in a biased way. This has created an unhealthy sense of distrust in governance.
- Due to this growing distrust, many well-intentioned policies (e.g. raising the CPF Minimum Sum, raising Medisave contributions etc) have received unhealthy backlash from the public instead of engaging in a healthy discussion. Such will hinder good policies from being implemented and people to benefit from governance. The growing lack of trust in governance needs to be controlled and not degrade to a level of incessant criticisms without being constructive.
