MOVEMENT OF SUBSTANCES
Diffusion
- Diffusion is the movement of any substance from its region of higher concentration to its region of lower concentration.
- It is a passive transport as energy is not required for the movement of the substance.
Diffusion in living things
- In living organisms, many organs have specialised features to improve the efficiency of diffusion of materials.
- These specialised features are mainly developed to increase the surface area so that they can carry out their functions more efficiently.
- Some examples of important diffusion of substances in living things:
- Gases exchange between the lungs and blood capillaries
- Absorption of simple food substances in the small intestine
- Gases exchange between the stomata and the atmosphere
- Uptake of mineral salts by root hairs in plants
